Gallows Hill Artist Studios is a creative space for artists. We offer an affordable environment to foster individual creativity and a community of artists to inspire sharing of ideas with our collective of artist tenants.
Our space is housed on the third floor of a large warehouse located in Salem’s Gallows Hill area at 16 Proctor Street. Just steps from Proctor’s Ledge, this historic location overlooks the site of Salem’s infamous 1692 hanging of 19 innocent people. The warehouse was originally built in the mid 19th century as one of Salem’s great tanneries, The Arthur J Mulholland Company. Now known as the Malik Building, this complex of buildings remains the only remaining tannery in Salem to continue to offer leather manufacturing through the Malik Embossing Corp.
In addition to the Gallows Hill Artist Studios, the complex hosts multiple other companies and features several creative businesses including woodworkers, and glass studios.
We offer ten spacious studio spaces ranging in size from about 170 sf up to 800 sf. Most studios are about 340 sf. Studio rates range from $200-$1000 per month. The ten-foot ceilings and large windows overlooking Gallows Hill Park offer an open and dynamic space to make art.
The space offers an open space concept for most studios. Space partitions delineate each studio space. Only select studios offer full walls and doors. Modifications will be considered with management approval.
The space offers ample shared common area, two restroom facilities, a shared kitchen area, shared work sink, and rotating exhibition space for artists. Rent includes all utilities and onsite parking.
Each artist will also have a portfolio page on this website.
Gallows Hill Studios are not handicapped accessible, but we do have access to a freight elevator and loading dock. There is no AC, Heat and other utilities are included in the studio rate.
Spaces are dedicated for working visual artists only. We will not accept applications for general business use or storage. While most artistic activities will be considered we cannot approve activities requiring any toxic fumes or techniques that require special ventilation (this includes spray paint), or use of flammable gasses.
