Gallows Hill Artists is honored to be invited by the Peabody Essex Museum to create and install two special gallery window displays featuring works by Gallows Hill Artists resident artists and displayed in their artist windows located at 181 Essex Street in Salem, Massachusetts. We thank PEM for supporting and recognizing Salem’s working artists.
The gallery windows showcase a wide range of styles, media, and inspirations through more than 50 works by 22 Gallows Hill Artists.
The project was coordinated and curated by CJ Karch, Linda Mullen, Chad Harris, and Bobbie Bush, with support from Gallows Hill Artists who developed the installation designs and helped bring these gallery windows to life.
Aunt Edna’s Attic
Aunt Edna’s Attic invites viewers to step up to the window as though they have discovered a hidden room at the top of a rambling old house. Everything has been washed in a deep, dreamlike blue: the walls, the furniture, the found objects, and the forgotten keepsakes seem suspended between memory and magic. Within this enchanted attic, artworks become treasures uncovered by curiosity. Headpieces rest like relics from an eccentric family history, tarot cards hint at secret knowledge, paintings and objects emerge from the shadows, and each piece feels as if it has been waiting years to be found. The installation transforms the gallery window into a storybook threshold, a place where childhood wonder, mystery, and creative imagination gather in one blue-drenched world that might open onto Narnia, Jumanji, or an entirely new realm of its own.

Circus of Imagination
Circus of Imagination opens like a hidden village at the edge of a dream. Inspired by Gallows Hill Artist CJ Karch’s ongoing world of Circus Em, the window becomes a theatrical landscape where puppet creatures, castle walls, and miniature stages gather among works of art. Ceramics, transformed dolls, wearable art, paintings, photographs, and mixed media pieces appear as characters in a shared story, each one offering a clue, a costume, a relic, or a spark of wonder. Visitors are invited to look closely, wander visually through the scene, and discover how imagination can turn a gallery window into a living stage of mystery, play, and creative possibility.
